Imagine you’ve decided to start a blog or write your first Kindle book.
You’re excited about the idea, but naturally, you want to see how other people are doing it. So you visit a successful website, look at an author’s collection of books, or read about an entrepreneur with thousands of subscribers.
Suddenly, your little project doesn’t seem so impressive.
They have polished websites, established audiences, and years of experience. You have a notebook full of ideas and a growing list of things you still need to learn.
It’s easy to wonder whether you’ll ever catch up.
But there’s a problem with that comparison: you’re comparing your beginning with someone else’s middle—or perhaps their twentieth year.
That’s hardly a fair contest!
You Don’t See the Whole Story
When you see someone else’s success, you usually see the finished product.
You don’t see every early mistake, abandoned idea, frustrating afternoon, or disappointing result that helped them get there.
Their current achievements may represent years of work.
Your first blog post doesn’t need to compete with their thousandth article. Your first ebook doesn’t need to match the quality of an author who has published fifty books.
You are at a different point in the journey, and that’s perfectly fine.
Measure Progress by What You’re Learning
Instead of asking whether you’re doing as well as someone else, ask yourself a better question:
Am I making progress compared with where I started?
Perhaps you’re becoming more comfortable using a writing tool. Maybe you’ve learned how to format a Kindle book, create a simple website page, or explain an idea more clearly.
Those accomplishments matter.
Progress isn’t always measured in dollars, subscribers, or sales. Sometimes progress means understanding something today that confused you last week.
And those small improvements can eventually add up to something meaningful.
Let Other People’s Success Inspire You
There’s nothing wrong with studying people who have accomplished what you’d like to do.
Pay attention to their methods. Learn from their mistakes when they’re willing to share them. Borrow useful ideas and adapt them to your circumstances.
Just don’t use their achievements as evidence that you’re falling behind.
You have your own experience, interests, responsibilities, and goals. Your path doesn’t need to look exactly like theirs.
Run Your Own Race
Your Second Act isn’t a competition.
You don’t need to publish the most books, build the biggest email list, or create the most impressive business.
Perhaps your goal is to earn some additional income, share your knowledge, or develop a project that gives you a renewed sense of purpose.
Those are worthwhile ambitions.
Today, look back at something you struggled with a few weeks ago. Is it a little easier now? Have you learned something useful? Have you moved closer to completing a project?
Give yourself credit for that progress.
The person you need to outperform is the person you were yesterday—not the person whose journey began years before yours.
Keep learning at your own pace. Your progress is worth celebrating, even when nobody else sees it yet.
We are publishing a new ebook each Sunday focused on sharing knowledge about thriving in your second act, financially, physically, emotionally, and especially in family relationships and leaving a legacy that lives on.
