Have you ever started something new, felt excited about the possibilities, and then hit a wall?
Maybe you tried to create a blog, but the technology confused you. Perhaps you published your first Kindle book and wondered why nobody seemed to notice. Or maybe you started exploring an online business only to discover that there was much more to learn than you expected.
Welcome to the real world of trying something new!
Setbacks can be frustrating, especially when you’re building something during your Second Act. You may wonder whether you started too late, whether you’re capable of learning the necessary skills, or whether the whole idea was a mistake.
But here’s an important reminder: a setback is an event, not an identity.
Something didn’t work as expected. That doesn’t mean you’re incapable of succeeding.
Remember What You’ve Already Overcome
Think about your life. You’ve probably faced challenges that required patience, determination, and a willingness to learn.
You may have raised a family, changed careers, managed difficult circumstances, or learned to adapt when life took an unexpected turn.
You weren’t born knowing how to handle those situations. You learned through experience.
Why should learning something new today be any different?
Technology may look intimidating, but you don’t have to master everything at once. You can learn one tool, complete one task, and gradually build your confidence.
Turn the Setback Into a Lesson
When something goes wrong, try asking yourself three questions:
- What actually happened?
- What can I learn from this?
- What is one thing I can do differently next time?
These questions move you away from self-criticism and toward practical problem-solving.
If your first blog receives little attention, learn more about reaching readers. If your first ebook needs improvement, apply what you’ve learned to the next one. If a tool makes everything harder, look for a simpler alternative.
You don’t need to defend every decision you’ve made. Sometimes the smartest move is to adjust your approach.
Take One More Step
Your Second Act doesn’t require a perfect record. It requires a willingness to keep learning.
You may need to pause, reconsider your strategy, or ask someone for help. That’s not giving up. That’s being resourceful.
Today, choose one thing that hasn’t gone according to plan. Instead of treating it as proof that you can’t succeed, identify one lesson you can take from it.
Then take one small step forward.
You cannot control every result, but you can control whether you allow one disappointing experience to define your future.
Your setback may be part of your story, but it doesn’t have to be the end of it.
Keep learning. Keep adjusting. Keep building.
Your Second Act is still unfolding, and there’s plenty of room for another chapter.
We are publishing a new ebook each Sunday focused on sharing knowledge about thriving in your second act, financially, physically, emotionally, and especially in family relationships and leaving a legacy that lives on.
