One of the biggest misconceptions about starting an online business is believing you need to invent something completely new. In reality, successful businesses are often built by solving everyday problems in simple, helpful ways.

Think about the questions people ask you regularly. Friends may call you when they need computer advice, help planning a vacation, organizing their finances, fixing a household project, or learning a new hobby. Those questions are clues.

Every question represents a problem someone wants solved.

The more effectively you solve that problem, the more valuable your knowledge becomes.

This is especially true in the digital world. A short guide, checklist, video course, template, or workbook that saves someone time or frustration can become a product that continues helping people long after you’ve created it.

Spend a little time this week visiting online communities where your potential audience gathers. Browse Facebook groups, Reddit communities, Quora, or discussion forums related to your interests. Pay attention to the same questions appearing over and over again.

Those recurring questions reveal opportunities.

Instead of trying to create the “perfect” product, simply create the best answer to one common problem.
