July 4th means fireworks, parades, and cookouts — but long before it became a day off work, it was a line in the sand.

In the summer of 1776, fifty-six men risked everything — their livelihoods, their families, their very lives — to sign a piece of parchment that declared boldly to the world: We will no longer bow to tyranny.

Among them was Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. At just 33 years old, Jefferson crafted words so powerful that they sparked a revolution not only on American soil but in the hearts of people yearning for freedom everywhere.

He and his fellow signers knew that freedom from oppressive rule was not granted by a king, nor could it be stripped away by one. It was a birthright — endowed by our Creator. When they wrote, “all men are created equal,” they threw down a gauntlet that still challenges every generation to live up to its promise.

A Stand Against Tyranny

In 1776, tyranny came in the form of a distant monarch and Parliament, dictating laws and taxes on people who had no say. It was taxation without representation, unchecked military power, and persecution for speaking out.

Today, tyranny can look different. It can creep in through corruption, censorship, or any attempt to silence the voice of the people. But the principle stands unchanged: No single ruler, party, or elite class has the right to lord over a free people.

Jefferson’s bold pen reminds us that liberty must be guarded fiercely, and that courage is contagious.

Liberty Is Still Ours

While it’s easy to feel like freedom is under threat today — and in some ways, it is — we should remember that the flame lit in 1776 can’t be snuffed out by anyone who sits behind a desk or holds a title.

Freedom belongs to us — the people. We inherited it from the signers who pledged their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.” They didn’t know if they’d win. Many lost everything. But they did it anyway so that we could stand here, centuries later, to celebrate what they began.

What We Can Do Now

This Independence Day, as fireworks crackle overhead, think of Thomas Jefferson’s pen scratching out those immortal words by candlelight. Think of the risk. The sacrifice. The hope.

Let that courage remind you that tyranny is never unbeatable — not then, not now. We each have a voice. We each have the right to say, “Enough.” We each have the right to push back against anything that stifles our freedom to think, speak, worship, and live as we believe we should.

The Torch Is Ours to Carry

Our freedoms were never meant to be stewarded by politicians alone. They belong to all of us — everyday people with families, dreams, and the simple desire to live free.

If we ever feel these freedoms slipping, we must look back to 1776 — and the courage of young Jefferson and his fellow patriots — and remember that liberty only survives when ordinary people stand guard.

So here’s to Day 1 of our 10 Days of Freedom: May Jefferson’s stand against tyranny remind us all — freedom is not given, it is claimed. And it is still ours.

Stay tuned for tomorrow, when we’ll remember Benjamin Franklin and the right to speak freely — a freedom no king, corporation, or politician can take away.

To Freedom,

Matt
